The original Nintendo Entertainment system will always share a soft spot in my heart when it comes to music. It produced some of the best tracks in video game history. After reading Blake’s awesome list of his Top 5 Video Game Sountracks, I’ve decided to share what I think are the 10 best tracks of the NES 8-bit era.
10. Contra – Jungle / Hangar
Who doesn’t love Contra? This is easily the best track on the whole game and it hits you at the very start of it. As soon as I hear it I’m ready to kick of Red Falcon ass!
9. Blaster Master – Area 1
A great example of the music being bigger than the game, despite never playing it many can recall this awesome track from the game Blaster Master.
8. Castlevania II Simon’s Quest – Bloody Tears
One of the very few things that was actually any good about this game, Bloody Tears is an awesome example of 8-bit music at it’s finest.
7. Final Fantasy – Introduction
The opening theme from the game that saved Square and got me hooked on RPGs for the rest of my life. Every variation of this song just happens to be my favorite track of the Final Fantasy game it appears in.
6. Mega Man 3 – Introduction
Although not the best Mega Man track, it is easily the most memorable to me. Mega Man 3 was the first Mega Man I ever played and the introduction theme has stuck with me ever since.
5. Ninja Gaiden – Opening theme
Not only does it have one of the coolest opening scenes of all time, it boasts one of the most badass opening themes of any video game ever made!
4. The Legend of Zelda – Introduction
Created by the legendary Koji Kondo, the opening theme for the Legend of Zelda is one of the most influential and iconic game soundtracks off all time. A definite no brainer to this list.“]
3. Super Mario Bros. – Overworld
I don’t even have to play the entire song, just the first 2 seconds and you already know what it is. Probably the most well known video game track in HISTORY, the SMB overworld theme is a legend in itself and has appeared in some variation in nearly every mario game ever released.
2. Mega Man 2 – Wily Stage 1
Probably the most covered track of the 8 bit era, Wily Stage 1 is an awesome fast paced rocking track that gets you incredibly pumped for the siege on Wily’s castle. Every time I hear it I want to play Mega Man. This track is, in my opinion, the epitome of a Mega Man game.
1. Ducktales – The Moon
In my opinion, this is the pinnacle of 8 bit music. The absolute best track of the entire NES library. There’s just not enough praise I can give it. Just listen for yourself.
So there it is. My list of the top 10 tracks of the NES 8-bit era. There were tons of tracks I could have put on here but I managed to just narrow it down to my favorite 10. Other tracks that stuck out to me that could have made this list such as Snake Man’s theme – Mega Man 3, Double Dragon – Stage 1, Metroid – Brinstar, and Punch Out! – Bicycle Training will have to wait until another list. Please feel free to comment below and let me know if I missed your favorite track or if you completely hate it. Also, let me know what your list would look like!
