“They’re screwing with the wrong people….” And with that grim warning the screen faded to black and season four of The Walking Dead came to a much anticipated end. As the rumors and speculations abound, season five has caught the imagination of both the television and comic book world. The show on one hand has kept most storylines straight and hasn’t strayed away from the comic with most characters while on the other hand they have strayed away in such a way as to not spoil the show for the fans that are keen in both genres. One rumor that seems to be popping up everywhere is that season five may be the most controversial and graphic. Gossip site Hollywood Daily News has reported that season five may even have some scenes that will be cut due to being “too disturbing” for tv. Having watched every episode more than ten times I can say you would have to be pretty over the top to have to cut scenes from that show. And they have gone down some pretty controversial roads already to enhance the ever present dangers of the world as it sits around them. How quickly we forget episode 14 of season 4 ,”The Grove”, in which Carol gently tells an obviously batshit crazy Lizzie to just,”look at the flowers” before dispatching her in way that still makes my skin crawl.
Another big question being asked is about the whereabouts of Beth. When last seen she had escaped the overrun house/church/mortuary that had become a refuge for her and Daryl only to be kidnapped? by someone in an older style car with a large cross on the rear windshield. Rumors of this possibly being a way to write in Father Gabriel are looking good. Though not confirmed by Robert Kirkman, The Wire’s Seth Gilliam has been spotted on set wearing a clerical collar. Other questions that loom are those surrounding the whereabouts of Carol and Tyreese and how exactly do Rick and the gang escape the boxcar in Terminus? One scenario could actually be the bringing in of an outside faction or group. If there’s anything that the comic book has shown us, it’s the fact that there are tons of other groups out there. One would think that after all this time you expect them to start running into each other, as it seems to have started happening in the last 4 or 5 episodes of season 4.
One more cool rumor to bring up has been about the series length. Now there has been some crazy ones talking about season five being the last and even one that claims Kirkman and AMC have a 12 season deal. Now its obvious that an old man Rick Grimes isn’t gonna be trudging around dispatching Walkers, so the show will have to end. Question is…when? I’d like to think that AMC will see the tremendous cash cow that the Show is and keep us all tuned in at least 4 more seasons but that’s not AMC’s style. They have a habit of ending their biggest shows(Breaking Bad,Mad Men)while they’re on top. So with that being said, the safe bet is that season 7 may be the swan song for our group. I know I may get hate mail for this but ending the show only 3 seasons from now means yes, Daryl Dixon will probably die. And when he does, the show’s writers are gonna want to escape the backlash of losing viewers(particularly the female 18-35 demographic)by simply bowing out on top. So as October draws nearer and we are left watching reruns on Netflix to feed our craving of blood and guts with a little human drama mixed in, we can only hope that Robert Kirkman and bunch can keep blowing us away and making us tune in!
