They’ve smashed, cracked, shot, screamed, slashed, cursed, and basically stormed their way through the very video games that you’ve been obsessing over for the last 20 years or so. So today I’d like to share with you my top ten most badass video game characters of the last two decades. Now please take into account this list reflects my views only and should you disagree or feel someone was left out, please feel free to comment below. NOW….ONTO THE LIST!
(WARNING!!! This list contains SPOILERS!!)
10. Commander Shepard/The Mass Effect series.
Hailing from the Systems Alliance N7 special forces program, the Protagonist of the Mass Effect series is special in some ways due to the fact that depending on the preference of the gamer Shepard can either be male or female. Assigned to the SSV Normandy as executive officer, Shepard scours the galaxy battling the Geth resistance and protecting the Citadel.
9. Sephiroth/Final Fantasy VII
The product of a biological experiment that combined a human fetus with tissue from the extraterrestrial lifeform Jenova, Sephiroth is the main antagonist in the Final Fantasy VII masterpiece. Lacking all remorse, he will forever be remembered for the senseless killing of Aeris.
8. Issac Clarke/Dead Space series
Imagine you’re just a simple ship engineer called out to a job when all of a sudden a seemingly-routine repair mission becomes a struggle to survive the Necromorph outbreak. That coupled with the fact the power constantly goes out and all you have is your trusty plasma cutter. All in a days work!
I couldn’t bring myself to choose between the two so I went ahead and put them together at number seven. No two characters are more synonymous with the Mortal Kombat franchise than these resident ninja badasses. Whether it’s a clawed vine from the hand or an icy blast from a fist, these two certainly have what it takes to….FINISH HIM!!!
6. Kratos/God of War
One of video games’ biggest antiheroes, Kratos is the ultimate “revenge” killer. After suffering the loss of his wife and daughter, by his own hands, Kratos sought revenge against the very God of War (Ares) that bonded the Blades of Chaos to him. What happens next is a roller coaster of savage beatings and merciless killings that only Kratos could dish out.
5. Samus Aran/Metroid series
I know I may get some backlash on this one but those familiar with her story will agree she’s one badass chick. Standing 6’3’’ and weighing near 200lbs without her body armor, Samus is built for the bounty hunting lifestyle she has nearly perfected. In her quest to get revenge on Ridley and his space pirates for the murder of her parents, Samus has been a staple of video games for nearly 30 years.
4.John Marston/Red Dead Redemption
You’ve left your bad ways behind you and settle down with your family on a quiet little ranch in West Elizabeth. Next thing you know the FBI kidnaps your wife and son and the only way to get them back is to issue your own brand of justice. Did I mention all this happens in the Old West? Rockstar Games hit it out the park with this guy.
3.Marcus Fenix/Gears of War series
Whether its mowing down Lambiant zombies or navigating a sub through a massive storm,Marcus Fenix does all that and then some. A loner with a tough rugged exterior, he abandoned his unit to save his father Adam, only to be court-martialed and sentenced to 40 years in prison. Rescued by his best friend Dom, Marcus must help the Delta Squad destroy the Locust that have emerged from middle earth. With some of the best voice over work ever done, thanks to John DiMaggio, Fenix just resonates Badass!
2.Link/Legend of Zelda series
Now it was hard for me not to list this guy at #1. He is without a doubt my favorite character of any video game genre. He has traveled through time, stopped the moon from crashing down on a village, trudged across endless deserts, and defeated one of the most vile evil villains of all time…..all before he was 18. Now according to many timeline posts, not all Links are the same so I’m sticking to the Ocarina of Time/Majora’s Mask Link. So with that being said just look at the incredible feats of bravery and his defeat of the Gerudo king Ganondorf and you’ll quickly see why I have him this high on my list.
1. Master Chief/HALO
Now unless you’ve been living under a rock or in a completely different galaxy, it’s hard not to put Master Chief Special Warfare Operator of the Navy John-117 or simply “Master Chief” at number 1 on my list. He is damn near the reason most people even bought Xbox consoles between 2001 and 2006. A cybernetically enhanced supersoldier, Chief has exploded across the galaxy to save humanity from evils such as the Covenant and the Forerunners. While not exactly the strongest or most intelligent, when humanity is on the line Master Chief has always been the soldier for the job.
What up people! I'm a proud Louisiana native that enjoys spending his time with his wife and son. I also love anything Frank Miller,Walking Dead,Predator,or the Legend of Zelda. Huge mark for the Gears Of War franchise also!
