Cain Marko, also known as the Unstoppable Juggernaut is powerful. Hell, even his official title has the word “unstoppable” in it for a reason. Contrary to popular belief, Juggernaut is not a mutant, rather he is an avatar of the mystical entity Cyttorak. Cain Marko’s powers are drawn from the Cyttorak Gem. The Juggernaut possesses a gamut of superpowers. Everyone knows that he has super strength, but not only can he dish it out, he can take it too. Marko has a mystical psionic shield that protects him from physical attacks. He has even shrugged off direct blows from Thor’s hammer, mjolnir. A little known fact about the Juggernaut is that he has unlimited endurance and can survive without food, water, or oxygen. Marko also has a healing ability. While not on the same level as Wolverine’s healing factor, Juggernaut once was stabbed in the eyes by Shatterstar and immediately healed after. Juggernaut’s claim to fame power is that when he is in motion, he cannot be stopped. Arguably, this is also his greatest weakness. Opponents with comparable strength or immense mystical power can redirect Juggernaut’s forward motion against him. There is a bonus addition to this list that reveals the only character recorded to have stopped the Unstoppable Juggernaut in motion.
Most of the time Juggernaut is defeated by telepaths. Just like Magneto, he wears a helmet that blocks telepathic attacks, but a joint effort is made to remove his helm which is why the article is focused on characters who have stood toe-to-toe with the Juggernaut and walked away victorious.
Juggernaut has handed Colossus his butt to him on more than one occasion, but this time Colossus used brain over brawn. Since there was a time when Colossus himself was possessed by the power of Cyttorak and became The Unstoppable Juggernaut himself, battles between these characters hold a greater value than others. Knowing that he could not survive a blow-to-blow confrontation, Colossus opted to take the ground out from under Juggernaut instead.
An example of using Juggernaut’s momentum against him. Using his hammer, mjolnir, Thor launched Juggernaut into orbit by “enwrapping thy wrist within its unbreakable thong.” Good thing he doesn’t need oxygen to survive. This is one of many battles with Thor. Other bouts have portrayed Juggernaut barely flinching at Thor’s strongest attacks.
Ok, so the Juggernaut is “unstoppable” when in motion. What happens if you encourage that fact? The Hulk did just that, which sent the Juggernaut on a trajectory a safe distance away.
Most every kid that grew up in the nineties remembers the time that Gladiator threw Juggernaut across the lake. Jubilee summed up the collective thoughts of the viewing audience by saying “I didn’t think anybody could do that to Juggernaut!”
Onslaught commands the top of the list because not only did he beat the Juggernaut, he made him cry. As long as Marko is bonded with the Cytorak Gem he is invulnerable. Nowhere on this list has there been an emotion of impending doom than when the gem was ripped out of his chest. In Juggernaut’s defense, Onslaught also destroyed half of the Marvel Universe, including the Avengers and the Fantastic Four.
Onslaught is a manifestation of Charles Xavier, who happens to be Cain Marko’s stepbrother. There was obvious suppressed rage stemmed from earlier childhood trauma.
Bonus: War (Hulk)
You read that right. The Hulk was once one of the four horsemen of Apocalypse.War to be specific. The process to becoming a horseman consists of genetic augmentation, where the advanced technology aboard Apocalypse’s space ship alters the molecular structure unlocking hidden abilities or enhancing existing abilities. The Hulk was granted full control of his power without the need for an anger throttle. He also grafted armor into his skin. Combine that with being outfitted with celestial weaponry, you have an entity that can stop the unstoppable. This is the only time of record that The Juggernaut was physically stopped while in motion.
